Actualización/Update

Sólo una pequeña actualización para decir que estoy trabajando muy duro estos días para terminar la tesis lo antes posible. Aun así sigo conociendo mucha gente, disfrutando de unas puestas de sol que quitan el hipo y poniéndome morena. A ver qué tal se da...

Just a little updtate to tell you that I´m working very hard in may Thesis so I can finish asap. Anyway, I go on meeting new people, enjoying the amazing sunsets and getting sun tanned. LEt´s see how everything go on...

¡¡¡Vaya semanita!!!/ What a week!!!

Ufff, chicos, vaya semanita... Todo empezó el fin de semana pasado cuando llegó Jan con su novia. Pues bien, nos fuimos el domingo a Ciudad del Cabo y a recorrer la península del cabo, con su Waterfront (donde hay playas y un acuario enorme), y la reserva natural del Cabo, con su Cape Point, Cabo Buena Esperanza, sus pingüinos y babuínos mangantes de comida. Fue absolutamente precioso como podéis apreciar en las fotos. Si queréis ver más fotos, mirad a las izda. el link hacia flickr. Realmente un lugar especial.
Uff, guys, what a week… Everything started the weekend of the 13/10/07 when Jan arrived with his girlfriend. Well, we went to Cape Town and to travel trough the Cape Peninsula, passing through Waterfront (where are beaches and a huge aquarium) and the Cape Point Natural park, with the Cape Point, Hope Cape, penguins and baboons thieving food. It was absolutely awesome as you can see in the pictures. If you want to see more pictures, check at the link on the left to Flickr. It was really a special place.

El resto de la semana pasó haciendo los preparativos para una super barbacoa, o Braai como las llaman aquí, con un toque hispano-cubano, ya que me propuse hacer amigos a base de Sangría y Mojito, y lo conseguí. A todo el mundo le encantaron ambas.
I spent the rest of the week preparing a super BBQ, or Braai as are called here, with Spanish-Cuban flavour, due to my intention of making friends through a Sangría and a Mojito. And I got it!! Everybody loved both of them.


Y el jueves nos fuimos Jan y yo con nuestro supervisor dela tesis, el Profesor Theo Keynhans, que es un hombre estupendo, muy amigable y que tiene contactos hasta en el último iglú del polo norte. Estuvimos viendo sus granjas, una de ellas en el valle de Tradouw, en Swellendam, con vacas Jerseys de ordeño en base a pastos, y la otra en algún recóndito lugar en el distrito de Riversdale, creo, donde tiene 20 vacas Hereford y un montón de naturaleza. En la primera, tiene una fuente o arroyo natural con agua de las montañas que tiene el agua marrón. El caso es que el agua está superlimpia, pero tiene un color sospechoso por los taninos de las plantas que hay en las orillas y en su recorrido. Doy fé de que es potable y el intestino no se resiente.

On Thursday, Jan our supervisor Professor Theo Kleynhans, a very nice man, friendly and who have contacts even in the last hut of the North Pole, and I went on a trip. We were visiting his farms, one of them dedicated to dairy production at the Tradouw Valley, in Swellendam. He has Jersey cows producing based on pastures. The other one is at the Riversdale district, I think, where he keeps 20 Hereford cows and a huge variety of natural species. In the first farm, there is a natural stream with brown water tainted with the tannins of the plants on its way down the mountain, but despite the suspicious colour, it´s still drinkable. I can assure you that one don´t get a sore intestine after drinking it.


Pasamos la noche en una casita en el medio de la ladera de la montaña, donde no había electricidad, así que pasamos una noche inolvidable a la luz de las velas y la fogata. También estuvimos visitando otras granjas de leche de distintas características (regadío, secano, Holstein, Jerseys, Guernseys...), pero con el más puro estilo Sudafricano, como podéis apreciar en las fotos. Si alguien está interesado en ver en más detalle las fotos, escribidme y os las mando.

We spent the night in a little hut in the middle of the hillside, with no electricity, so it was an unforgettable night lighted with candles and fire camp. We were visiting other surrounding farms with multifarious characteristics (irrigated, dry-land, Holstein, Jerseys, Guernseys…), with the pure South African stile, as you can appreciate in the pictures. If any of you is interested in more detailed pictures, just write me and I´lll send them.

En la segunda granja, también dormimos en una cabaña sin electricidad, así que más velas, fogata y gas butano. Vimos una serpiente, escarabajos peloteros del tamaño de una nuez grande, tortugas, y yo hasta me relacioné con una pulga que quiso ser mi amiga. Y vaya si lo fue, tengo picaduras por todas partes. Y, por supuesto, vimos la final de Rugby en la que los Springboks (gacelas) Sudafricanos les dieron para el pelo a los leones Ingleses. Fue impresionante ver a todo el país celebrándolo. ¡Qué locura!



We also slept in a hut with no electricity at the second farm, so more candles, fire and gas. We met a snake, huge beetles, tortoise, and I even made some contact with one flee who wanted to be my friend. And she was, I have stings all over. And, of course, we watched the final of the Rugby world championship, in which the South African Springboks bit the English Lions. It was amazing to see the whole country in a party. Crazy!!!!

A la vuelta hacia Stellenbosch tuvimos hasta un pequeño problema técnico con el coche y tuvimos que desmontar la palanca de cambios. Así que desde Robertoson (a unos 20 km de Stellenbosch) hasta casa, yo tuve que cambiar las marchas cuando Theo me decía. ¡¡Buen trabajo en equipo, si señor!!

On the way back to Stellenbosch, we even had a little technical problem with the car and we had to take to pieces the gearbox. So in Robertson (approx. 200 km from Stellenbosch) to home, I had to change the gears whenever Theo told me. That was a great team work!!!

Llegó Jan/Jan´s here

Jan, mi compañero de clase con el que voy a hacer el proyecto, llegó ayer a Stellenbosch con Miranda, su novia. Han estado recorriendo Sudáfrica durante tres semanas. Así que no sé si me acompañará a muchos sitios porque ha visto tanto ya... Le veis en la foto con manzanas, fruta que anda todo el día comiendo.
Jan, the classmate with whom I´ll be doing the project, arrived yesterday at Stellenbosch with his girlfriend Miranda. They´ve been traveling around South Africa during three weeks, so he might not come with me to many of my journeys because he´s already been there... Here you see him with apples, fruits that he´s always eating.


Esta es otra foto del complejo residencial donde vivo. Los bloques alojan a 24 alumnos cada uno y están rodeados por jardines y zonas para hacer barbacoas, o Braais como las llaman aquí.
That´s a picture of the residential complex where I live. The bocks host 24 students each and they are surrounded by grass and places to BBQ, of Braais, like the call them here.


Esta parejita son mis compañeros de habitación. Compartimos cocina, pero luego ellos tienen su habitación con su baño y yo los míos. Ella es Eugenia, rusa residente en Dubai, y el es Johann, de Pretoria. Ayer Eugenia y Lena, una chica Ucraniana que hay aquí, nos deleitaron con un cocido a la rusa con un montón de carne y verduras y que terminó rosa porque también llevaba remolacha. La verdad es que fue divertido comer una sopa rosa fucsia. A ver qué es lo próximo.

This couple are my room-mates. We share kitchen, but each they have their own room and toilet, and I have mine. She is Eugenia, from Russia but living in Dubai, and he is Johann, from Pretoria. Yesterday, Eugenia and Lena, an Ucranian girl, cooked for us a russian speciality with a lot of meat and vegetables. Actually the stew was pink because it also contains red beet so it was very funny to eat a pinky soup. Let´s see what is the next experience.
