ENGLISH VERSION UNDER PARAGRAPHS IN SPANISH
Esta encantadora pareja, Mandy y Shawn (alemana y sudafricano) me han acogido este fin de semana en Port Elizabeth. Conocí a Mandy cuando ambas tomamos parte en un campo de trabajo en Japón en el verano de 2001. Es gracioso lo pequeño que puede llegar a ser el mundo, ¿verdad? Juntas de nuevo en Sudáfrica.

This charming couple, Mandy and Shawn (german and south african) hosted me last weekend at Port Elizabeth. I met Mandy for the fisrt time when we were both taking part in a work camp in Japan, during the summer of 2001. Is funny how small is the world, isn´t it? Together again in South Africa

Llegué allí el jueves después de comer y Shawn me estuvo enseñando un poco la ciudad. Es genial que algún lugareño te enseñe su ciudad porque te muestra una visión totalmente diferente que la de un turista, sobre todo en Sudáfrica. Gracias a ellos tuve la oportunidad de ver cómo se vive en realidad en las ciudades sudafricanas. O mejor dicho, cómo se vive fuera de la burbuja de Stellenbosch, que dista mucho de ser una ciudad convencional en este país (hablo desde mi experiencia, quizá no estés de acerdo).

I arrived there on Thursday afternoon and Shawn showed me around the ciry. It´s great that a local shows you his own city, because yo hav the chance to get to know a totally different city than if you were just a turist, most of all in south Africa. Thank to him and Mandy I had the chance to experience how people live in South African cities. Or let´s say, how do people live outside the Stellenbosch bubble, which differs a lot from other cities of the country (I talk from my experience,maybe you disagree).


El viernes, estuve paseando por la playa mientras esperaba a que Mandy terminara de trabajar y Shawn preparaba sus trastos para un campeonato de pesca. ¡¡¡Ahora puedo decir que me he bañado en el Índico!!! Bueno, es un poco exagerar, sólo metí los pies. Después de comer, cargamos el coche (Backie) y las dos aventureras emprendieron su camino. Primera parada: junto a Baviaanskloof, reserva natural, donde nos encontramos con Nacho, un compañero madrileño que estudia también en Wageningen y que, como yo, estamos recorriendo mundo. Él, junto con un grupo de estudiantes y profesionales, están trabajando en un programa de desarrollo rural en esta zona. Tras despedirnos de Nacho, al que por cierto, veré el sábado que viene porque vamos a ver juntos el parque Kruger, nos dirigimos a baviaanskloof. El paisaje, bastante bien, aunque he de admitir que había puesto mayores expectativas. El camino de subida se puso bastante difícil y no sabíamos exactamente a dónde íbamos, así que en un momento paramos, sacamos la mantita y... a repostar!!! Fue una pena que no llegaramos a la cima de la montaña. Queda pendiente para la próxima visita.


On friday morning, I was strolling along the beach while waiting for Mandy to finish working. Shawn was preparing his fishing stuff to attend a fishing competition. Noa I can say that I´ve bathed in the India Ocean!!! Well, maybe I´m exagerating a little bit, I dare just to put my feet in the water.After lunch, we load the Backie and the two adventurous women left for their roadtrip. First stop: next to Baviaanskloof natural reserve, where we meet Nacho, a guy from Madrid who studies at Wageningen as well, and who, like me, is visiting around the world.He works together with other students and vproffesionals on a program for rural development in this area. After leaving Nacho, who by the way is going to join me in my trip to the Kruger nationa park next weekend, on Saturday we led to Baviaanskloof and its amazing landscape. However, I´ve put loads of expectations and I must admit that it was a little bit dissapointment. The roads to go up the Bergplaas were rough and we were not really sure where we were going. So at one point of the journey we just stop, took a blanket and... supper!!! It was a pity that we couldn´t get to the top of the mountain. Pending task for next time.

Ya por la tarde dejamos Baviaanskloof y nos dirigimos hacia Addo Elephant Park, que como su nombre indica, contiene un montón de elefantes, más de 400, y otro sin fin de animales. De camino paramos en Uitenhage donde estaban de fiesta. Había un millón de gente, por lo menos, mercadillos, música, comida... Vamos, fiesta en toda regla. En un escenario cuatro niñas de no más de 6 años tomaban parte en una competición de baile. ¡¡En mi vida he visto cosas tan pequeñas moverse así!! ¡¡Vaya desparpajo!!

Already in the afternoon, we left Baviaanskloof and led to Addo Elephant Park, which as the name says, contains a lot of elephants (more than 400) and many other animals ad plants. On the way we couldn´t help stopping at Uitenhage, where there were celebrations. It was packed up with people, flea markets, food everywhere, music... Summing up, a huge party!! In a stage, 4 little girls (not older than 6 years old) were taking part in a dancing competition. My Godness!! I´ve never seen such a tiny person move like this!!


Proseguimos nuestro camino por carreteras secundarias (de arena) a través de reservas privadas de caza en las que pudimos ver los primeros animales: cebras, élands, gacelas y monos. Muy buena introducción a lo que nos esperaba al día siguiente. A las 6:30 de la mañana del domingo estabamos en la puerta del parque Addo, las primeras visitantes del día, porque en realidad, el parque abre sus puertas a las 7:00.

We went on our way through dirt-roads passing by private game reserves where we could see the first animals: zebras, eland, bocks and monkeys. A great introduction of what the following day was going to offer. At 6:30 am on Sunday we were at the gate of the park. We were the fist visitors of the day becuase, indeed, the park opens its gates at 7 am.

Vimos elefantes, Kudus, ciervos raros (Red Hartebeest), Jabalíes (Pumbas, para los amigos), Élands, Tortugas leopardo, monos, suricatos, zorros, avestruces, unas aves llamadas "Secretary bird" (aves secreatia), ágilas, gansos egipcios y otros pajaritos, y escarabajos de la basura (de esos que hacen pelotas con los excrementos de los demás y van rodando con ellos). ¡¡¡Fue fantástico!!!

We saw Elephants, of course, Kudus, Red Hartebeest, Warthogs, Elands, Leopard Turtouse, monkeys, suracates, foxes, ostrightes, secretary birds, eagles, egyptian geese and other birds, and dung beetle (those that make balls with the feaces of the rest of hte animales and roll with them). It was fantastic!!!


De camino a una reunión semanal con la familia de Shawn, paramos en la playa para poder disfrutar del Índico otro poquito. En la arena había medusas del tamaño de ruedas de coche. Cuando llegamos a la casa del a hermana de Shawn, ya estaban todos comiendo. Comida familar al puro estilo sudafricano, aunque podría haber sido español perfectamente. Abuelos, hijos y nietos todos juntos comiendo en corro. Una familia encantadora que me recibió con los brazos abiertos y el plato lleno. ¡¡Muchas gracias!!

On the way to a weekly family meeting, Sunday Lunch, at Shawn´s sister´s house, we stopped at the beach to enjoy the Indian ocean a little bit longer. At the beach there were jellyfish the size of a car-tyre. When we arrived at the house, everybody were already eating. Pure South African family lunch, despite one could have perfectly though that it was in Spain. Grand parents, parents and grandchildreneating together. Charming and very lively family who welcame me with open arms and full plate. Thank you very much!!!


El lunes por la mañana salía mi avión de vuelta para Ciudad del Cabo. Antes de salir, como dice mi amiga Lili, me consentí. Resulta que aquí no se lleva tanto eso de darse duchas y la gente por lo general se baña. Así que me pegué un baño relajante que me dejó como nueva. De hecho el fin de semana me ha dejado como nueva. ¡¡Gracias Mandy y Shawn!! ¿La próxima en España?

On moday morning I took my flight back to Cape Town. Before leaving, as my friend Lily always says, I spoilt myself. The thing is that at Mandy and Shawn´s house one doesn´t shower, one takes baths. So I took a relaxing bath. Indeed, the weekend has really relaxed me and now I feel like new. Thank you very much Mandy and Shawn!!! Next time in Spain?
